Your Microneedling Aftercare Guide: The First 72 Hours and Beyond

What to do (and avoid) after microneedling, from the first night to the weeks after, so you get the most from your treatment. From Golden Legacy Wellness in Neenah, WI.

The microneedling session is only half the story. The real work happens over the days and weeks after your appointment, while your skin repairs itself and builds new collagen. How you care for your skin during that window has a big effect on your results.

At Golden Legacy Wellness, every microneedling client goes home with personalized aftercare guidance. This post walks you through what to expect and how to support your skin at each stage.

Why Aftercare Matters So Much

Microneedling creates thousands of tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin. These channels prompt your body's natural healing response, which is what leads to smoother texture, softer scars and a more even tone over time.

Those same channels also leave your skin temporarily more sensitive and open. For a few days, your skin is more reactive to sun, harsh products, bacteria and heat. Good aftercare protects your skin while it heals so that its energy goes toward renewal, not irritation.

The First 24 Hours: Keep It Simple

Right after your session, your skin will likely look and feel like a mild sunburn. Redness, warmth and slight tightness are normal and usually settle within a day or two.

During the first day:

  • Leave your skin alone. Avoid touching your face, and keep your hands clean if you must.
  • Skip makeup. Give the microchannels time to close before applying foundation or powder.
  • Rinse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser in the evening. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Use only what we recommend. A gentle, hydrating serum or moisturizer supports healing. Hold off on everything else.
  • Sleep on a fresh pillowcase to reduce bacteria on your skin overnight.
  • Skip the workout. Heavy sweating can irritate freshly treated skin.

Days 2–3: Hydrate and Protect

By the second or third day, the redness usually fades to a light pink. Your skin may feel dry, tight or slightly rough. This is a normal sign that it is renewing itself.

  • Keep hydrating. A gentle moisturizer helps with the dryness and supports your skin barrier.
  • Wear a mineral sunscreen once your skin is comfortable, and wear a hat outdoors. Treated skin is much more sensitive to UV light.
  • Don't pick or peel. If you notice light flaking, let it come off on its own.
  • Avoid heat. Skip hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and very hot showers.
  • Makeup can usually return around 48–72 hours, once any redness has calmed. Clean brushes and sponges first.

Days 4–14: Ease Back Into Your Routine

Most clients look and feel close to normal within a few days. Your skin is still rebuilding beneath the surface, though, so be patient before going back to stronger products.

  • Wait about a week before using retinol, exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs), vitamin C or scrubs. Ask us if you're unsure about a product.
  • Hold off on other facial treatments like waxing, peels or laser for about two weeks.
  • Keep up the sunscreen every day. This is the single most important habit for protecting your results.
  • Avoid swimming pools for at least 72 hours, since chlorine can irritate healing skin.

The Weeks After: Supporting Collagen From the Inside Out

Collagen building continues for weeks after each session. That is why results build gradually and keep improving after your final treatment.

In keeping with our holistic approach, healthy skin also depends on what you do beyond your skincare routine:

  • Drink plenty of water to support hydration and circulation.
  • Eat nourishing foods rich in protein, healthy fats and colorful vegetables.
  • Prioritize sleep. Your body does much of its repair work at night.
  • Manage stress. Chronic stress can show up in your skin. Acupuncture and herbal medicine may help support your overall balance.
